VOLUNTEERS’ WEEK 1st-7th June 2023 Day 3
Saturday 3 June
Today we’ll be sharing the story of Sue, a member of our wonderful volunteer team:
‘I came to know the Museum because my late husband was an enthusiastic volunteer. I remember my family and I attended a wonderful events day featuring a chance to operate drones and which my husband helped to organise. During the first Covid lockdown I was invited to join a Zoom meeting and was impressed by the friendliness and determination of Trust members to continue supporting the Museum in whatever lay ahead.
When the museum re opened I volunteered to help in the shop. A monthly rota is organised by Lynette our Visitor and Outreach Manager so each volunteer is able to select dates they are available.
On my first day looking after the shop I was made very welcome. My training was excellent with support from the duty officer of the day and other volunteers. I didn’t have to be an expert on radar but have always found the story of radar fascinating.
We are encouraged to interact with the visitors and you soon learn from them about the many aspects of RAF Bawdsey during World War 11 and afterwards. The resource room is available for research and further details about radar. Volunteers are also able to contribute in many different ways such as research topics, new exhibits using modern technology and special events.
I enjoy my volunteer days as the museum is such a pleasant place and talking to the visitors is a highlight. It is lovely to see and hear the children having a good time.
Visitors and volunteers are well looked after. I feel valued as a volunteer, making new friends, learning new stories/facts and our manager is a great support to everybody”
