D-Day minus Two
Peggy Butler, Radar Operator, was stationed at RAF Bawdsey during the build-up to D-Day in 1944.
Peggy wrote about D-Day in her memoir ‘Searching in the Dark’.
‘Of course, we all knew ‘D’ Day was pretty near. An air of terrific excitement and suspense was everywhere. Then it happened….everyone who could get there was crammed into the cookhouse…you could have heard a pin drop.
I walked back quietly to the [Bawdsey] Manor between the green trees and spraying lilac thinking suddenly, soberly of the fury unleashed in France, and feeling a little sad that one who had flown so gallantly when the odds were against us all should not see this beginning….’
